Educational research has proven that the more a parent reads with their child the better the child becomes at reading. Take advantage of down time by reading fun books with your child. Bedtime is a perfect reading time. It not only relaxes but also builds a love of reading and hearing books.
Here are some great ideas for building reading skills. Plan a Family Reading Night. No TV only reading books together. The public and school libraries are great resources for getting new and interesting reading material. You may also think about having a Family Library Night. Take a trip to the library once or twice a month.
Book Sharing Ideas
Here are some book sharing ideas you can use to interact with your child when s/he is reading. Ask:
- If you could be any character form the story, who would you be? Why?
- What is the setting? Where did the story take place?
- Would you tell your friend to read this book? Why or why not?
- Describe something that made you laugh or made you sad.
- Why did you choose this book?
- What would you change about this book?
- List 3 character traits of the main character.
- What did you like best about the book? What did you like least about the book?
Picking the right book...
If you're not quite sure if the book is at the correct reading level for your child try this. Have your child read the first page aloud, if s/he can read the first page then the the book is probably at the correct level.
Last thoughts....
Remember have fun reading, use the pictures to enhance meaning and help with difficult words. Make reading enjoyable.
